Scholarships - Winners - 2008

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2008 AFHE homeschool college scholarship awards!

Kierstyn Lyts
Kierstyn will be attending Arizona State University at the ASU Polytechnic campus where she will major in Special Education as a part of the School of Educational Innovation and Teacher Preparation. Kierstyn decided on this field of study after volunteering for a Joni & Friends summer retreat for families affected by disabilities. As she interacted with many of the children there, she realized how challenging and rewarding it is to work with children affected by various physical and mental disabilities. Kierstyn eagerly anticipates college and the opportunity she will have to learn how to assist children with disabilities.

Parker Owan
Parker will be attending the University of Arizona in the fall of 2008 where he will major in Electrical Engineering and minor in Music. His goal is to enter the music industry and specialize in sound recording, sound processing, and music production. Parker chose this field as a result of both a desire and love for playing a myriad of instruments in different settings as well as the experience he has gained with multiple disciplines in the engineering field already. He hopes to make a difference in the entertainment community and be at the forefront of innovation.

Karis Peelen
Karis will attend Oklahoma State University and study hotel and restaurant management with a minor in Spanish. After spending 10 months abroad in Madrid, Spain during high school, she wanted to incorporate her love for travel and fluency in Spanish into her major. In addition, Karis has worked for years in her family's restaurants and has a love for the hospitality industry. During her years at Oklahoma State she plans to study abroad, intern at a hotel, be involved on campus, and of course pick up the slight southern accent. Karis is extremely excited to embark on this new journey!
