AFHE Welcomes Legislative Liaison
Tom Lewis

Tom Lewis and his wife Colene have been married 39 years and they have three adult daughters whom they homeschooled through high school. All three graduated with honors from ASU, are married, and have provided Tom and Colene with nine grandchildren. The Lewises attend Redemption Church Gilbert.

Tom and Colene served on the AFHE Board of Directors for over a decade in a variety of capacities including convention and public relations directors, principled lobbyists, and Tom served as president from 1994 to 2001. Tom and Colene have both spoken at numerous conferences, churches, community and education associations, and at the AFHE Convention, too!

After a rewarding 41-year career at SRP, Tom retired in December 2013. In retirement, Tom is spending his time lobbying on behalf of AFHE, coaching the Tempe Prep junior high golf team, catching up with old and new friends over coffee, spending time with the grandkids, reading, honing his golf skills, and playing with his new cordless power tools.

Arizona homeschoolers have benefitted greatly from Tom’s service over the years as he has invested himself in sharing the vision for home education throughout our state and by cultivating meaningful relationships with legislators and organizations such as CAP (Center for Arizona Policy) and HSLDA (Home School Legal Defense Association). Tom developed many of the AFHE events and services that we still offer today including the Arizona Homeschool Scholarship Fund, the state leadership conference, and legislative days events at the state capitol.

Tom was instrumental in shepherding legislation that led to reducing and ultimately eliminating the requirement for homeschool student testing in Arizona as well as working to gain homeschool access to regent scholarships and interscholastic sports.

The AFHE Board is grateful for Tom’s willingness to invest time in his retirement years to once again serve the Arizona homeschool community. Tom’s experience, relationships, and expertise will be great assets in assisting AFHE in the work of preserving the freedom to homeschool with the least amount of government oversight possible.

AFHE Board Member, Rich Haupt, is serving as AFHE’s Legislative Director. Rich is working with Tom on legislative issues and serves as the liaison between Tom and the AFHE Board.
