Homeschool Day at the Capitol

Monday, March 4, 2013 was a beautiful, sunny day with nearly 750 homeschool parents and students gathered together at the Arizona State Capitol. Every few years AFHE sponsors a Homeschool Day at the Capitol event to remind our legislators and governor of our growing constituency. Homeschool Day at the Capitol is a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community to celebrate the freedom we enjoy in directing our children’s education and to homeschool with the least restrictive regulations possible.

We enjoyed a number of performances by homeschooled students, sang patriotic songs together, and were privileged to hear several special guest speakers.

Governor Jan Brewer was greeted by a cheering crowd and standing ovation. She spoke of her support and appreciation for Arizona’s homeschool community, and issued a Homeschool Week Proclamation. We were also treated to hear from Tom Lewis, former AFHE board member; John Huppenthal, Superintendent of Public Instruction; Dr. Don Covey, Maricopa County School Superintendent; Representative Doris Goodale, Chairman of the House Education Committee; and Senator Kimberly Yee, Chairman of the Senate Education Committee. Each had positive things to say about homeschooling. Many families also used the occasion to visit the legislature as a lesson in state government.
